Russian Ridge
Ooops.. Long Ridge is closed..
February 25, 2006
I met up with Nick, and a couple of new riders, Cynthia and Ray, to get in some riding before the week-long rain.
Ok, I totally screwed up. I forgot to check the MidPenn trails condition website BEFORE going out for a ride. This was a ride originally scheduled for a Sunday, but moved up because of the crazy winter weather. When we hit trailhead, Long Ridge was closed to bikers and horses.
We drove up the road a few miles to Russian Ridge. I haven't been there in close to 8 years that I don't remember the trails very well. We spent a lot of time looking at signs and the map to figure out where we were (and enjoying the views).
And it didn't matter from where, the views and the riding were just wonderful. Unfortunatley, Russian Ridge tends to be a short ride (3-4 miles), mostly decent/mellow riding, with a couple of steep sections.
As you can tell by the pictures, the trail isn't very technical in most spots (except for Ancient Oaks has some roots that will grab you and bring you and your bike down--just ask Cynthia ;-). But, it's a great, but too short of a ride in the winter/spring.
Route taken:Ridge trail to the Hawk Trail up Ancient Oaks to the loop around.
