Mount Waterman
Downhill time..
June 19, 2002
Russ and I went out for a ride at Mt. Waterman, which is one of the many places to take your bike up a lift and cruise the entire way down. Views were wonderful, and it was great to get out of the L.A. basin--even for just the afternoon.
Once you park, just go up this short, steep ramp and greet the lift operator. We bought all-day lift tickets, and he put our bikes on the back of the lift. It's a very interesting experience to get on a ski lift with no snow and no skis. Just mountain bikes and a nice, fast fireroad with beautiful views.
After getting lost and finding ourselves on the wrong part of the trail (take a series of lefts after the first downhill from the top), we found our way back to the main trail. Once we were on the main trail, it's a great smooth fireroad you can really get some speed on. You even need to be careful for "deer" on the trails. :-)
There's other wildlife too.. including trees. Uh, Russ, can we go back to riding soon? :-) (As I pretend to test my brakes, which work quite well after the bike stopped and I didn't a little later).
Uh, Russ? Sorry folks, Russ is into the very artsy pictures.
Before I ate it (front braked waaaay too hard in a sandy turn), I did manage to get quite a bit of speed at one point. Wheee! By the way, did I mention that the trail is covered in pine cones?
On our way back, Russ missed a great photo op: after I ate it, one half of me was sandy (the right side), and the left side was completely clean. Unfortunately, I had a very sore shoulder for weeks to come.
Route taken: Fireroad from lift 1 (lots of lefts!).
